Tough defense and excellent free throw shooting led Leon to victory over top-seeded Fleming Island in the 5A Region 1 Semifinal. Senior Forward Aaron Pensel was blocking shots at will and grabbing rebounds for Leon, keeping the Golden Eagles out of the paint. Fleming Island’s shooting attack was also kept at bay and there would be no heroics from Nate Lowery in this match up. Three different Golden Eagles fouled out in this game (T. Burney, K. Baskin, A. Greenridge), a season high. The Lions went to the line 29 times, and scored most of their points from the charity stripe. Final score 50-47.
With the win, Leon continues to be road warriors in the postseason and will head to Ponte Vedra on Thursday. The Sharks defeated Gainesville in a close win, 60-57.
